The Art Of Coaching The New Generation X In Business
Each generation has its own way of living life. When it comes to
coaching employees it is very important to consider the age factor.
To coach someone, the coach has to handle him or her in their way
that gets best results. People between the age group of 26 and 46
are called Generation X. These people have to be handled in the
way they were brought up.
Most of the generation X live life independently and they expect
some freedom when at work. As per research, generation X are lot
into learning new stuff, so coaching them is not a big problem.
Here are few tips that can help you learn the art of coaching.
Most of the people in this generation expect to get training before
they get on to the job. They are ready to learn new things and want
to follow only when they are sure. The coach has to make sure to
give them complete knowledge about the work. They will tend to ask
questions and one has to be prepared to answer them. They are generally
dedicated and will try to improve themselves time and again. As
a coach you can let them handle and explore a project. They love
to do things on their own. Once they have completed a task, you
can point out the mistakes. However do appreciate and thank them
for the completion of the project or the given job.
They like to be in a family kind of atmosphere and can work well
in a team. For a coach to teach them team spirit is not a problem
as these people love to handle a team project or accomplish any
task by working in a team. To achieve more from them, the coach
will only need to create an environment that they like.
Though they like to be in a group they like to be treated individually.
When it comes to telling them about their job or any kind of a feedback
they expect individually. A coach has to identify each person separately.
Especially if you are giving negative feedback, do it in person
or they might feel offended when done in a group. At the same time
do appreciate their work in front of the entire group as that will
build up their confidence and they would want to perform better.
A coach should not try to keep a watch on the employees. Keep a
track of their work but do not monitor them constantly. As a coach
you need to trust them and allow them to complete the given target.
They are very flexible in doing their own work and need space.
These people value relations and when at work they wish to have
healthy relations with their boss. They feel valued when the boss
personally appreciates their work or even gives feedback for improvement.
They believe they would have growth if they have a good rapport
with their senior managers and bosses.
X generation people are very easy to handle only if you enact with
them in accordance with their behavior pattern. Once they are trained,
you are sure to get the most out of them.
